How Are We Different From Other Builders?

Midwest Homes places the greatest care and attention to the details that make a home special.  We believe in a candid and honest approach to prepare potential home builders for what to expect in the quality and price of a home.  As we strive to make the process transparent, it’s common for people to ask us about what we do differently from other builders.

Where some builders might cut corners to disguise the quality of a home and it’s price, we are passionate about the integrity of our craftsmanship and the products we endorse so that the home you invest in will stand the test of time.

If you want to better understand prices and cost per square foot

Here are some things we include in our cost per square foot and ways we separate ourselves from the competition…

Technology

Home performance that stands out

Smart Home Technology
Elite AV and Automation

A true high-performance home integrates smart home technology to improve the functionality of the home for you.  We work with Elite AV and Automation to provide you with the best products and technology in the market.  We provide a base system in all of our homes that includes a wired network with distribution panel in the lower level mechanical room.

Other Features

We include Lutron Lighting Control, Ring for the front door, and Nest thermostats.

Foundation

The process and continual protection that we provide will give you added assurance that your home is made for the long haul.

Form-A-Drain foundation
Warranty and Insulation

We offer a 15 year warranty with R10 insulation, while most builders only offer a 10 year warranty with R7.5 insulation.

Foundation Footing System

We use a Form-a-Drain foundation footing system to ensure the proper thickness of footings, but also to act as interior and exterior drain tile for the foundation damp proofing and passive radon systems.

Framing

The structural support of a home provides its central integrity.  Our homes combine materials of the highest quality with exceptional construction techniques.

Quality Framing
LVL Studs vs SPF Studs
On walls that will have cabinets and tile, we want to ensure a straight and plumb finished product.  We use LVL studs that are an engineered wood instead of the standard SPF studs most builders use.  LVL studs offer a more precise shape which will give your cabinets and tile the extra quality you deserve.
20" Energy Heel

While many builders use little to no energy heel, we use a 14″ energy heel that allows for the full depth of attic insulation to extend out to the far edge of the exterior wall.  This helps keep the roof edge cooler and prevents ice dams from forming during a Wisconsin winter.

"Intelligent Wall"
We use a Dow Chemical designed and tested “Intelligent Wall” as our exterior walls.  This provides the best cost efficient R-value and also controls the dew point to avoid condensation in the stud cavities.

Flooring

A great floor takes precision.  In order to get a stiffer floor with less bounce and squeaks, we combine specific products with a detailed process.  The finished result will be a floor you love.

Quality Flooring
Excellent True Joist Pro Rating
We use a floor joist design with a live load of 480 lbs/sq ft, while most builders use 360 lbs/sq ft.  This creates a stiffer floor with more strength and support.  Our joist design also comes with a performance rating for the whole system and not just the minimum requirement to make the spans work.  Our goal is to have a True Joist Pro Rating of 40 or more to ensure your satisfaction.
Extra Squeak Prevention
Our sub floor process is extensive in order to prevent squeaks in your home.  First, the subfloor is glued and then fastened to the joist.  After the drywall is hung in the house, we go through again and screw the subfloor, giving the floor added squeak prevention.
Added Moisture Resistance
We use a 3/4″ Aspen Fir plywood to give your floor moisture resistence.  Most builders use an OSB product that allows for moisture to get into the boards during the construction process.  Our attention to detail helps create a finished product that has a stiffer floor with less bounce.

Interior Finish

We use a higher quality of wood and provide the extra custom touch that distinguishes us from the rest.

Quality Trim
White Trim Finish
  • We use a Poplar or Pine for the base and casing vs. MDF
  • Our doors have a composite solid core vs. a hollow core
  • We paint in place vs just putty nail holes

The attention to quality provides essential longevity to the finish of your home.

Stained Trim Finish
  • We use Maple boards for the base and casing vs. particle board with a maple veneer
  • Our doors are solid Maple vs. hollow core
  • Our trim is prefinished for long lasting durability
Custom Mantles and Cubbies
Most builders use premade mantles and cubbies, but we provide custom mantles and cubbies that are designed specifically for your home.

Countertops and Cabinets

We believe that appearance, durability, and functionality are essential to great cabinetry and countertops.

Quality Counter Tops
Granite and Quartz Countertops

While most builders have an initial price that includes laminate countertops, we know that most buyers want the quality and beauty of granite or quartz countertops.  That is why we choose to incorporate them into our initial price.  We know how frustrating it is to be deceived about hidden upgrades, so we aspire for complete transparency from the start.  If you want laminate countertops, we can do that too!  We also offer up to 12 colors of quartz countertops.

Soft Close Cabinetry

We use cabinets and drawers from Northern Classic Cabinetry that have soft close hinges.  This not only eliminates the noise of closing drawers and cabinets, but also extends their longevity.  We also include full extension glides for the doors.

Fixtures and Other Features

Quality Kohler Fixtures
Plumbing Fixtures

We use Kohler plumbing fixtures throughout the home and include two body sprays in the shower of the primary bathroom.

Shower Tile Work
Most builders will only take the shower tile up to 6′, but we take the tile to the ceiling.
Drywall Corners

We have a round corner bead on the drywall, but most builders have a square corner bead.

Value Engineered Construction

We use 2′ increments to use our materials as efficiently as possible.  Our value engineered construction process allows us to maximize lumber usage to get the most value for the dollar.
