Our Story

Midwest Homes has been a committed custom builder in the Madison and Dane County, Wisconsin area since 1969. Our passion to provide great customer experience has been one of the hallmarks of our business. Our building process is simple, enjoyable, and manageable; making it just right for you and your family.

Midwest Homes, Inc. was founded by William F. McKee in 1969 after realizing that there was a need for a quality custom home builder. Bill started his career off by attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After attending the University of Wisconsin, Bill went to work for Oscar Mayer, where he became one of Oscar Mayer building maintenance supervisors and assisted in finding new building locations. He would then manage the construction of these new facilities, which helped in the growth of Oscar Mayer.

In 1970, Bill began developing land around the Madison area. You might have heard of some of the areas they have developed that include: Tower Hill, Wildwood, Seminole Ridge, Chapel Valley-Fitchburg, and Gateway-Verona. For many years, Bill ran Midwest Homes, Inc. & McKee Associates, Inc. (our commercial construction sister company)

In 1993, Brian McKee, took over as Construction Manager. Brian is the second generation of Midwest Homes, Inc. He brings many new and innovative ideas to the building industry. Brian started learning every aspect of the building business at a very early age while working for his father. He started as a laborer and landscaper while in middle school, and worked into being a carpenter the last two years of high school. While attending college, Brian continued to work as a carpenter and he also began running small commercial projects for McKee Associates, Inc. (a sister company).

We recently built a home and were so impressed by the way the Midwest team helped us to customize the basic design to make it our own. We added windows, moved the fireplace, incorporated special lighting, and had the carpenters build a buffet in the dining area, special shelving for baskets in the laundry room, open shelving in the kitchen, and a drying rack in the art room.

On a much larger scale, Brian modified the roof line so that solar panels could be added some day, and designed the eves to take advantage of the winter sun but temper the harsh summer sun. We appreciate Midwest Homes working with the Focus on Energy program to give us an energy-efficient home.

The Midwest team helped us in a myriad of ways with the many decisions that were involved in building our new home and selling our previous one. We highly valued their continuous support throughout the entire process. Is there any better way to say “thank you” than to tell you “we love our home!” You guys were fantastic to work with, as were the teams you had working on the home. Jeremy is wonderful at what he does and always pleasant to see. He always took time when we’d visit and show us progress, and kept us looped into decisions.
